  1. Missing the application deadline

Students should be mindful of this very important feature of the scholarship requirement. This is because submitting applications after the deadline is an automatic disqualification eventhough you meet all the other requirements or even if you are to be the best candidate. Many scholarship applications have strict deadlines that must be adhered to. If you miss the deadline, your application will likely be rejected, no matter how strong it is. Ensure that you keep track of the deadline and submit your application well before the due time.

  1. Not Paying Attention to the requirements

There are variations in scholarship requirements put forward by many scholarship sponsors and institutions. Some scholarships are only available to students pursuing certain majors, while others have specific requirements which may be attached to specific community service, skills or other extracurricular activities. Be sure to carefully read through the requirements and only apply to scholarships for which you meet the eligibility criteria.

  1. Failing to Follow Instructions

One major thing scholarship applicants should note is that the screening process begins with the ability to follow specific instructions while applying. Following specific instructions on how to apply, including what materials to submit and how to format your essay is a great way to start off your application journey. Make sure you read and follow all of the instructions carefully, as inability to do so could result in automatic disqualification.

  1. Writing a poor essay

Many students just feel that they can wake up and scribble something that looks like scholarship essay without taking their time to pen down essays that shows their strengths and stand them out. The essay portion of a scholarship application is often the most essential aspect of scholarship application. Do well to take the time to write a unique, well-crafted, thoughtful essay that addresses the prompt and highlights your strong point and accomplishments. Once you are done with writing, consider giving it to someone else to read and provide useful feedback before you submit it.

  1. Not Proofreading your Application

Grammatical and spelling errors can make your application look untidy and unprofessional. Remember that the assessors do not have much time to spend on each application, so sending in applications with grammar and spelling mistakes may already cost you your chance of receiving a scholarship. Make sure you proofread your application thoroughly before submitting it. Consider having someone else look it over as well to catch any mistakes you might have missed.

  1. Applying for too Few Scholarships

Always try to explore many scholarship opportunities that you are qualified and eligible for. This will give you room to explore all the resources available for scholarship awards. Remember not to put all of your eggs in one basket when it comes to applying for scholarships. Apply to as many scholarships as you can, as this will increase your chances of receiving an award.

  1. Giving up too soon

Persistence and consistency are attributes that all students who wish to receive scholarships must develop. Scholarship applications can be a time-consuming task, and it can be disheartening to receive rejection letters. However, don’t give up too soon. Keep applying and remember that every rejection brings you one step closer to a scholarship that you will eventually be awarded.

By looking out for these common mistakes and avoiding them, you can increase your chances of being awarded a scholarship and making your education more affordable and worthwhile. Good luck with your scholarship applications!
